Weight as a Key Factor: Basketball Shoes in Comparison

Can the weight of basketball shoes impact a player's performance? Bereket Köse addressed this question in his 2018 study, aiming to analyze the effect of different shoe weights on speed and jumping performance in male basketball players. The study's results indicated potential psychological and physical advantages.

With that in mind, I too prefer lighter shoes over heavier ones as I personally have the impression that added weight has a negative effect on my overall stamina and fatigue during the course of a basketball game. Having tested and played in a variety of basketball sneakers throughout recent years, I've classified them into three weight categories:

  • lightweight (x ≤ 350 g)
  • middleweight (350 g < x ≤ 425 g)
  • heavyweight (x > 425 g)

  • It's worth noting that the list comprises both performance shoes (Type: P) and lifestyle shoes (Type: L). This combination provides a more comprehensive view of available options. To ensure measurement consistency, I weighed the left sneaker of each model in my respective size, primarily US9, though sizing can vary between different brands.
